Allison Williams Talks About Performing Kanye West's 'Stronger' For 'Girls' On 'Late Night' (VIDEO)

Allison Williams On Her Awkward 'Girls' Performance

Fans of "Girls" got to see Allison Williams dust off her singing chops on the latest episode of the hit HBO show. But it certainly wasn't on a track anyone would have anticipated. In a scene that Vulture called both "mortifying" and "cringe-worthy," Allison's character Marnie gave a surprise performance at her ex-boyfriend's business party. She performed Kanye West's "Stronger." But her original take was very different, as she explained on "Late Night."

When she got the script, she assumed that she'd be rapping the song as Kanye does, so that's what she prepared for the table read. "The moment comes in the script and I go for it. I rap the entire song," Williams said. "At the end, Lena [Dunham] came up to me ... and she said, ‘That was so great. Um, in the show, it’s just gonna be a ballad.'"

And that's exactly what it was on screen: a stripped down ballad that actually sounded rather pleasant, but did not go over well in that situation at all.

As a debut performance for her character, it wasn't exactly a show-stopper. Hopefully, though, it won't crush her dreams too completely. There are plenty of other raps out there just begging to be reimagined as slow ballads.

Catch Allison Williams on the season finale of "Girls," this Sunday at 9 p.m. EST on HBO. "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" airs every weeknight at 12:37 a.m. EST on NBC.
