Alma Adams Wins Midterm Election Race Against Vince Coakley In North Carolina

Democratic North Carolina state Rep. Alma Adams defeated Republican and former television anchor and radio personality Vince Coakley in the state's 12th District Tuesday.

Adams had the support of Emily's List, a group that works to elect Democratic women candidates who support abortion rights In contrast, Coakley received the North Carolina Right to Life's endorsement.

The Democratic-leaning seat became open when Rep. Mel Watt (D-N.C.) resigned to become head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency.
