Horse Rescued From Quicksand-Like Mud

After being stuck in thick, quicksand-like mud for hours in Avalon Beach, Australia, an 18-year-old horse was miraculously rescued, the Associated Press reports.

According to the report, the horse's owner and daughter we riding on the beach when the horse began to sink. Rescuers raced the clock to save the horse before the tide came in, using a sling and tractor to pull him out. The three-hour job was expedited after they were able to sedate the horse.

It's been a good month for horses. Last week, 24 babies horses were saved when rescuers purchased them at an auction just before the horses were sent to a slaughterhouse.

"That's rewarding seeing life come back into their eyes," Tawnee Preisner of the Horse Plus Humane Society told KHSL at the time. "Seeing their spirits returning to them and see that life isn't all about being hard and rough."

Last year, a 4-year-old pregnant mare was rescued from a 7-foot hole in Pueblo, Colo. The horse was reported to be in good health after rescuers used ditch maintenance equipment to lift her out.
