Amber Portwood Explains Why She Chose Prison Over Rehab On 'Amber Behind Bars' (VIDEO)

Amber Portwood baffled fans of the "Teen Mom" franchise when she chose to go to prison rather than the drug rehab program she was offered. Dr. Drew Pinsky sat down with Portwood on "Amber Behind Bars," and she explained just how desperate she'd become.

In the special, Amber admitted that she'd reached a point in her life where she just didn't care any more. She knew she was addicted, and had started using Fentanyl patches.

"I just didn’t care. I would go into the mornings to go pee to screen and I would be chewing on a patch as I was screening," she admitted.

In other words, she had the clarity to know she was going to fail if she didn't go to prison. In fact, she said, "I don’t know how I knew, but I knew I was going to die."

Now, though, she's getting the treatment she needs, and even working toward getting her GED. The hardest part of this whole process has been being away from her daughter. Leah's father Gary has yet to allow Leah in to see her mother in prison, which she said she understands. It doesn't make being apart any easier, though.
