A general cloud of disappointment is shrouding much of the country's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community this morning as North Carolina approved a constitutional amendment late Tuesday defining marriage solely as a union between a man and a woman.
Joining the chorus of dissenting voices are a number of A-list celebrities and other media personalities, many of whom took to Twitter to sound off on Amendment One, which will now act in addition to the state's statutory prohibition against recognition of same-sex marriage.
Writes Seth Rogen: "Claiming that someone else's marriage is against your religion is like being angry at someone for eating a donut because you're on a diet." Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker, herself a North Carolina native, said she was "really disappointed" in her home state, while Ellen DeGeneres simply noted, "Getting married was one of the greatest things I have ever done. I hope everyone in North Carolina gets the same opportunity someday."
Considerably more blunt was Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears, who noted, "Sorry Mom -- but f**k you, North Carolina. You're on the wrong side of history. Absolute fools."
