When husband and wife duo America Ferrera and Ryan Piers Williams decided to open their latest film “X/Y” with their own sex scene, there’s one reaction they didn’t quite expect: laughter.
The cast of William’s second directorial effort joined HuffPost Live’s Ricky Camilleri on Monday, following the premiere of the film at New York City Tribeca Film Festival. “X/Y” stars Williams, Ferrera, Melonie Diaz and Jon Paul Phillips and is a character-driven drama that focuses on the lives of four friends struggling to connect with each other and the world.
Ferrera, who starred in the recently released Cesar Chavez biopic, was first helping produce the film before taking on the role of Sylvia. In the film, the actress stars alongside real-life husband Williams to portray an on-screen relationship on the rocks.
“The movie opens with you having a pretty sad sex scene,” Camilleri asked the duo. “What was that like, watching that with 900 people?”
“They started laughing!” Ferrera responded.
The HuffPost host quickly interjected, “What were they laughing at?”
“The discomfort of this relationship... Ryan and I were shocked, it was the last thing that we anticipated, is that people would laugh,” Ferrera continued. “It’s a very, like you said, uncomfortable, sad sex scene that then turns into a fight. And I started to realize that the laughs were laughs of familiarity. That this relationship that was obviously deep and intimate but it’d grown a little cold and distant. And people were laughing, I think, because they recognized it.”
During the interview, the cast spoke about the struggles of each character and how they represented some of the struggles of those caught between “generation X and generation Y.”
