Latina activist and actress America Ferrera spoke to women across the nation on Saturday at the Women’s March on Washington, condemning President Donald Trump’s stance on women’s issues and calling for resistance against a president who “took up a credo of hate.”
“It’s been a heart-wrenching time to be a woman and an immigrant in this country ― a platform of hate and division assumed power yesterday. But the president is not America. ... We are America,” she said.
“We are gathered here and across the country and around the world today to say, Mr. Trump, we refuse. We reject the demonization of our Muslim brothers and sisters. We condemn the systemic murder and incarceration of our black brothers and sisters. We will not ask our LGBT families to go backwards. We will not go from being a nation of immigrants to a nation of ignorance. We won’t build walls and we won’t see the worst in each other.”
Ferrera was the first of a host of keynote speakers at the march, including Gloria Steinem, Scarlett Johansson, LGBTQ activist Janet Mock, Michael Moore and civil rights activist Angela Davis.
The Latina actress hasn’t ever been quiet about her political stance or her desire for fellow Latinos to get out to the polls. She has spoken out against Trump on a few occasions ― most notably in a 2015 open letter to him.
Hundreds of thousands are expected to march in the nation’s capital Saturday.
