America's Lowest-Paying Jobs (PHOTOS)

As you may have heard, the U.S. economy is predominantly a "service economy." Which means, for better or worse, a large percentage of Americans have been pushed away from once-stable positions to relatively low-paying and less secure jobs in service industries. (Newsweek recently dubbed this the "Blue-Collar Blues".)

Need proof? The positions that rank among America's lowest-paying jobs in 2009, based on a recent summary compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics are all service jobs. And the BLS notes, "retail salespersons, cashiers, general office clerks, combined food preparation and serving workers" are among the most common jobs in America. Disturbingly, each job's average wage hovers around the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
