Andy Cohen’s “Plead the Fifth” is the closest thing we have to a celebrity judge, jury and executioner ― in Wacha’s name we trust ― and on Monday’s episode of “Watch What Happens Live,” it was time for Amy Schumer to take the stand and defend her cringeworthy interview with Lena Dunham.
In the September interview, Dunham had told Schumer about her experience at the Met Gala earlier this year with New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who she claimed refused to speak to her throughout the evening.
After inquiring about the status of Season 5 of “Inside Amy Schumer” (the Fifth was pled) and who turned down appearing in the sketch “Last Fuckable Day” (Dianne Keaton and Susan Sarandon), Schumer talked to Cohen about Dunham’s tone-deaf comments, which the “Girls” creator later apologized for after the internet picked up its pitchforks.
“I think we all have room to learn,” she added. “I can’t think of anybody I’m racist against. When I get accused of that, I’m just like, you got the wrong Jew. You’re barking up the wrong Jew.”
In her Instagram apology, Dunham, who has long been the target of criticism for representation (or lack thereof) of minorities on her HBO series, admitted to contributing to “a long and often violent history of the over-sexualization of black male bodies” and letting her “totally narcissistic assumptions” get the best of her.
“I think people definitely target Lena,” Schumer said. “I think everybody has room to learn more about other cultures and races and what’s offensive and what’s not. I spoke up a little bit because I want to get my girl’s back. I love Lena. I know she has the best intentions.”
If Andy really wanted to up the ante, he would have interrupted Schumer’s answer with a “That’s great, Amy, but we have Gabrielle Union on the line ... ”
