When the G500 4×4² was officially unveiled a year ago, off-roading fans went nuts. It's the supped-up version of the already popular G-Class SUV, but it comes with so much more. Until now, you couldn't get your hands on one in the U.S. But that's all about to change.
In a short period of time, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4×4² will arrive at dealerships nationwide. It's a softer version of the G63 AMG 6×6, and naturally comes with two fewer wheels, but retains the terrain-chewing hardware that's the thing of off-roading dreams.
For instance, enhanced and strengthened bodywork meets sturdy portal axels, with advanced ground clearance measured at a healthy 17-inches. This gives the G550 the innate ability to cross nearly 40-inches of water (actually 39.4), and enables the truck to traverse rougher terrain with portal axels.
Driving this capable off-road warrior is a very potent and twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine that makes 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, controlled with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The four-wheel-drive option can send half the power to front/rear for ultimate control. And this vehicle offers a front, center and rear locking differential for improved traction control.
Of course, with this many exterior and engine features, you can be assured that the interior is decked out with all things Mercedes-tastic. Things like an 8" touchscreen console, GPS, premium sound system, leather upholstery, heated/powered seating, automated climate control, and more should be expected.
Technology features will likely also include smart charging stations, USB/Bluetooth integration, rolling Wi-Fi, optional rear-seat entertainment center, power adjustable pedals, folding/heated/powered side mirrors, side steps, metallic or wood interior/exterior trim accents, sunroof and much more.
But what's this bad-boy going to cost you? All information points to a base price tag of $119,000 USD. This, of course, is the base model. So to get all of the goodies in the bag, you'll have to upgrade. Our prediction is that a well-outfitted upper trim level will run you at least $155,000 or more, depending upon how lavish your tastes really are.
The real question, however, remains: Do you really want to be off-roading in a vehicle that costs this much?
