To whom it may concern,
Every 7 weeks, the average person in the UK throws away their own body weight in rubbish. Estimates show that up to 80 percent of every dustbin-full of waste could have been recycled. However, recycling isn't perfect either. By the time a bottle is recycled, much of the damage has already been done with energy used to produce the bottle and transport it.
Don't get me wrong. In the UK, it is almost impossible to live without damaging the environment. Our whole system works in a certain way and it is really hard to live outside of that. Especially if you're also trying to live a fairly normal life at the same time.
Therefore I would like to offer an idea. Recently I went into the Holland and Barrett in York where I live. It's pretty new and so I went in to explore, mainly because I'm quite nosy. I noticed that there were big vats of cooking oil on the wall, there were large containers with various nuts in them and there were also big pots with different kinds of olives in them.
Now each of these had something in common. Each of these things had no packaging on them. Instead, people would come into the shop and fill up their own containers and buy the product.
This got me thinking. Surely it's possible for more shops to display like this. Surely it's possible for more products to be displayed like this. What about rice, pasta, flour, sugar, etc?
Most people have jars and containers of some sort at home. Imagine if you only needed to buy packaging every five years, rather than every single week when you did your food shop.
This might sound completely irrelevant to a lot of you. But eventually the planet isn't going to be able to take much more of us dumping waste in landfill. Many people's lives are already being impacted and it is only going to get worse.
For example, by 2050 it is estimated that around 200 million people worldwide will have had to leave their homes because of climate change. This might be because of extreme temperatures, food shortages or rising sea levels.
We have the power to change the system. It might seem like individuals cannot change something so big, but so many significant events in history have been started by the small actions of people.
Have a think about it.
