CNN's Anderson Cooper misses the good old days, the summer of 1993 when "the shirts were flannel, the rock was alternative, and the Smashing Pumpkins burst into the mainstream with their album 'Siamese Dream.'" Well, a lot has changed in two decades, and Wednesday night Cooper ripped Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan for going soft in his old age, having recently posed with two cats for the cover of Paws Chicago Magazine.
We, like Cooper, just had to laugh.
"Perhaps Billy Corgan is, I don't know, off his alternative rocker, but I think maybe there's more to this," Cooper said, adding that he hopes to never see a product called "Eddie Vedder's Prune Jam" or Thom Yorke on the cover AARP. "Maybe he's being ironic, or maybe when the cool rock stars start doing less rockstar-y things, it kind of makes us face our own mortality."
As Cooper pointed out, last year Corgan had a cameo in a WWE-themed commercial for a Chicago furniture store, and he's been known to bust out into impromptu 8-hour jam sessions based on German-born author Hermann Hesse's 1922 novel "Siddhartha" in recent months. So does this just come with the territory of growing older, or is Corgan indeed off his "alternative rocker"?
