In animal news this week, several bears have been turning up where they're not always expected. A bear swam across the canal separating Cape Cod, Massachusetts from the mainland and is now traversing the peninsula. According to the Associated Press, "Officials say research dating to the 1700s suggests this is the first bear on the Cape." Later in the week, another bear turned up for work at an office complex in Parsippany, New Jersey. The bear was tranquilized and moved to a park.
A good samaritan in Washington state was recognized this week for helping to save an injured bald eagle. Robert Hutton rescued the bird from the middle of a road and took it to a local veterinary hospital. Doctors, who have named the bird "Glen," believe it has about a 30 percent chance of survival.
A fisherman in Australia discovered the carcass of a nearly 13-foot long giant squid this week. Al McGlashan was quoted as saying, "In all my time on the water -- and I've spent 200-plus days out there -- I've never seen anything like it."
Sadly, the well-known dog Lucky Diamond lost her battle with cancer this week. The dog, which holds a Guinness world record for being "the animal photographed with the most famous people," was also known for her use in charity and animal welfare work in the New York area.
