'Animal Practice' Canceled? NBC Replaces Comedy With 'Whitney'

Has "Animal Practice" been canceled? NBC is replacing the comedy starring Justin Kirk and Crystal the Monkey with "Whitney."

"Whitney" will premiere on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC after the network delayed its premiere a few weeks ago.

"Animal Practice" has struggled in the ratings since making its official debut. The series brought in a healthy audience after a preview following the 2012 Olympics -- close to 13 million viewers -- but audiences didn't stick with the show, which is set in an animal hospital. Its most recent episode on Tuesday, October 17 brought in 3.8 million viewers and had a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Its fellow new NBC comedy "Guys With Kids" has been faring better, but not by much. "Guys With Kids" had 4.3 million viewers and a 1.4 rating in the demographic in its most recent telecast.

"Animal Practice" is the first new NBC show to get the boot. The first series on all broadcast networks to get pulled was CBS's "Made In Jersey."

"Whitney" was originally slotted for Friday nights with an Oct. 19 premiere date along with "Community," but NBC delayed the premieres of Whitney Cummings series and "Community" in favor of giving it a bigger promotional push.

“Given the success we’ve had for the past four weeks -- including winning the first week of the season in A18-49 -- we’ve decided to continue to concentrate our promotional strength on our new NBC shows that are scheduled Monday through Wednesday and have therefore decided to hold 'Community' and 'Whitney' from their previously announced premieres of October 19th," the network said in a statement in early October. "Without having to launch these comedies on Friday at this time, we can keep our promotion focused on earlier in the week -- plus we will have both comedies in our back pocket if we need to make any schedule changes on those nights. When we have a better idea of viewing patterns in the next few weeks, we will announce new season premieres of 'Whitney' and 'Community.'"

No word on the premiere date for "Community," which also includes Crystal the Monkey in its cast.
