'Animal Practice' Preview: Dr. Coleman Loves Animals, Hates People, Including His New Boss/Ex-Girlfriend (VIDEO)

'Animal Pratice' Preview: Stay For The Monkey?

So far, everyone seems to agree that the monkey is pretty entertaining on NBC's "Animal Practice" (Sun., 10:38 P.M. ET on NBC). The network gave Olympic viewers a chance to preview the fall-premiering new comedy in hopes they could nab some more viewers. While the Olympics averaged 30 million viewers or so a night, NBC without the Olympics ... well, doesn't.

The premise of the show is that Dr. Coleman (Justin Kirk) is a great veterinarian who loves animals, but doesn't get along so well with people. It was kind of hard to argue with him in this premiere, which featured a father ready to put down the family pet rather than pay $2,000 for surgery. Granted, that's a lot of money, but it may have been more about the fact the dog ate a coaster from a strip club the father went to.

Dr. Coleman had no problem coercing the man into paying his bill, and even his supposed foil in the show loved that moment. She is Dorothy Crane (Joanna Garcia-Swisher), his ex-girlfriend and new owner of the hospital.

So far, the show features a lot of stock characters, but HuffPost TV's Maureen Ryan reminds viewers "that even the best NBC shows of the last decade needed some time to find their feet." For now, it's already worth tuning in for the monkey.

"Animal Practice" has its official premiere -- with its second episode -- on Wednesday, September 26 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser.
