Anne Hathaway's performance in "Les Miserables" likely moved many thousands of moviegoers to tears on Christmas Day; the film earned a reported $18 million during the holiday, according to Deadline.com. And if you were one of those people weeping during Hathaway's rendition of "I Dreamed A Dream," don't worry: Hathaway does too, just maybe not for the same reasons.
"I cry, but I think it's because I'm still connected to the experience of making it, the process," Hathaway told MTV. "For me, when I see it, I actually have to be aware when I'm doing press, because it brings me a lot closer to Fantine. She's so broken that I actually have to protect myself a little bit. So when I saw it, I did cry, but not because of what I was doing [on screen]. It was because I was back in the process of making it. The rest of the film made me bawl like a baby."
In "Les Miserables," Hathaway plays the aforementioned Fantine, a doomed single mother-turned-prostitute. The role has been praised by even those critics not infatuated with Tom Hooper's version of "Les Miserables," and it's expected that Hathaway will earn an Oscar nomination for her troubles. The actress lost 25 pounds to play Fantine and told Vogue that the experience left her in a "state of deprivation, physical and emotional."
