Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown (D), who lost the race for governor in 2014, announced in an email Thursday he will run for Congress.
"I decided that I would run for office once again only if I believed in my heart that I still had something to give back to our community - the community where I've raised my children and dedicated my life to public service," Brown said in the email, according to WUSA9. "After serious reflection, prayer and discussion with my wife Karmen and our three children, we are very excited to announce my candidacy for Maryland's Fourth Congressional District."
Brown is running for the seat being vacated by Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.), who announced Tuesday she would run for Senate in 2016. Edwards is running for the seat being vacated by Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), the longest-serving woman in Congress, who announced earlier this month she would not run for re-election.
Brown easily won the Democratic nomination for governor in 2014, defeating Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler and state Del. Heather R. Mizeur. He lost the general election to Republican Larry Hogan.

Born in New York, Brown served five years as an Army helicopter pilot. He completed his active duty in 1989 as a captain and remained in the Army Reserve until last summer. After attending Harvard Law School, where he was a classmate of Barack Obama's, he moved to Maryland and took a job with a Washington law firm.
In 1998, still a relative newcomer to Maryland, he won a seat in the House of Delegates from Prince George's County.
He served as lieutenant governor, in former Gov. Martin O'Malley's administration, from 2007 until January.
