New York City Mayoral Candidate Anthony Weiner (D) dismissed a question Monday involving New York City Comptroller candidate Eliot Spitzer and his 2008 prostitution scandal.
During Weiner's BuzzFeed Brews interview, editor Ben Smith revived comments from Friday's comptroller debate, where Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer (D) argued that Spitzer should have been prosecuted.
"A view on the Comptroller's race in the City of New York?" Weiner asked, looking perplexed. "No, I'm not spending a lot of time on the Comptroller's race in the City of New York."
"They're spending a lot of time thinking about you," Smith replied, drawing some giggles from the crowd.
"I'm not surprised at that," Weiner said. "But no, I don't have any view on the Comptroller's race, one way or the other."
Weiner's remarks come two weeks after Spitzer appeared on MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews," saying he would have fired Weiner for his "improper" behavior. He added that he would not be voting for him in the mayoral election.
“You're not going to vote for Anthony Weiner, can you just say that now?" asked Matthews. "You don't think he should be mayor of New York."
"Fair point, that is correct,” Spitzer replied.
A Siena College poll released Monday finds that 68 percent of New York State voters and 62 percent of New York City voters are embarrassed by the national attention Weiner and Spitzer are receiving for their candidacies. The poll reached out to 814 voters with a 3.4 percent margin of error.
