New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner (D) spoke to Today's Savannah Guthrie about his campaign, telling the NBC host that he believes his wife Huma Abedin has been unfairly scrutinized in the wake of his latest sexting scandal.
“I don't think she did anything wrong,” Weiner said in the NBC interview, which aired Monday morning. “Her crime is standing at my side and helping me get through it. That's her crime."
Weiner's remarks aired on the eve of Tuesday's mayoral primaries. The former congressman, who had leapt to frontrunner status before details his new sexting scandal came to light, hovered between 6 and 9 percent in the latest round of polling. Meanwhile, city Public Advocate Bill de Blasio led the pack of Democratic candidates with close to 40 percent.
Despite his poll numbers, Weiner told Guthrie that he's "convinced" he will win the election.
He also acknowledged that he may not have been entirely honest with the public on when his lewd messaging with women ended.
"Should I have said it happened on a particular date? Maybe you're right, maybe I should have," Weiner said. "I did say I did these things, I did say I did them over an extended period of time, I said I did them with more than one person, and I said more things would come out."
Weiner added that he didn't know whether Abedin would join him again on the campaign trail.
