Racist and anti-Semitic signs and statements from a write-in candidate have drawn new attention to Kentucky's U.S. Senate race this week.
Robert Ransdell placed about 20 campaign signs reading "With Jews We Lose" around northern Kentucky this week, and he told WLWT he plans to add about 200 more.
"I believe that there is no such thing as racial equality. You see that in our cities every day," he told the TV station.
During a Constitution Day speech to high school and college students at the University of Kentucky on Wednesday, Ransdell's microphone was cut off after he made racist comments, saying there was a "need for this nation's white majority to recognize that they have ethnic interests," WUKY reported. The candidate also ranted about "Jewish-owned and controlled media."
The university said Ransdell's microphone was silenced because speakers had been asked to talk about the Constitution, not politics.
"I was about to get to the Constitution before I was cut off. ... But, you know, I intended also after ... traveling that far to be forthright about something I believe in," Ransdell told WKYT.
A white supremacist website has said Ransdell also plans to air ads on a public radio station, the Courier-Journal in Louisville reported. He has said he knows he won't win the Senate contest but hopes to share his message.
Ransdell -- who calls himself a "white separatist," according to WKYT -- will not appear on the ballot in November alongside the major candidates, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R), Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes (D) and libertarian David Patterson. However, since he filed as a write-in candidate, county clerks are required to tally any votes for him.
