Arcade Fire To Match Haiti Donations, Up To $1 Million

At the Quebec Music Festival, Canadian natives and indie gods Arcade Fire used their opportunity on stage to turn attention to a cause close to their hearts: Haiti.

The lead singers are also husband and wife: Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, the latter of whom is the daughter of Haitian expatriates. Their connection to Chassagne's homeland led to the song "Haiti" from their debut album, Funeral.

Now that six months have passed since the 7.0 earthquake that left hundreds of thousands of Haitians homeless, Arcade Fire are trying to keep interest in Haiti alive, promoting Kanpe, a new nonprofit organization that seeks to eliminate poverty in Haiti by aiding its most vulnerable populations. Chassagne sits on Kanpe's Board of Directors as the group's "Grand Ambassador."

At the Quebec show, Butler told the audience that anyone can give $5 to Kanpe by texting KANPE to 30333. The band will match donations, up to $1 million (that's in Canadian dollars, by the way).
