An Indiana teen who escaped from a police car after being arrested for underage drinking apparently succumbed to a guilty conscience when he returned the next day to turn himself in to authorities -- while still handcuffed.
On Thursday afternoon, Zachary Keilman, 18, of Rensselaer, Ind., walked into the Lowell State Police building and told police that they were likely on the lookout for him, as the Chicago Sun-Times reports. He had left his ID in the car before he ran out of the police car and cut the chain between the two handcuffs he was still wearing.
“He walked in. I asked him, 'Can I help you?'" recalled Indiana State Police Sgt. Alan Jamerson to CBS 2. "He said, 'I think there might be a warrant out for my arrest.'"
Keilman had been arrested on Wednesday evening for participating in an underage drinking party in Newton County, Ind. He apparently fled the scene while a deputy was dealing with other attendees of the party.
The suspect was being held at Newton County Jail, the Chicago Tribune reports, but has since been bonded out. He now faces additional charges of escape and resisting law enforcement.
