It was all too much for British judo star Ashley McKenzie.

After being knocked out of Rio 2016 on Saturday, the 27-year-old summed up his heartbreak in one poignant photograph posted to Instagram.

McKenzie lost out in the round of 16 of the men’s 60 kg category to Kazakhstan’s Yeldos Smetov, the eventual runner-up to Russia’s Beslan Mudranov.

I think there’s tears of hard work over four years,” McKenzie later added in an emotional interview with BBC Sport, before posting on Twitter that his journey “has been tough” and thanking his supporters.
