Ashley Wagner Was Not Impressed With Figure Skating Judges In Team Event (PHOTOS)

Judges, take note: Ashley Wagner is going to be checking the protocols.

The U.S. figure skater was visibly disappointed with her scores after her performance in women's short program of the inaugural team event at the 2014 Sochi Olympics on Saturday. After completing an impressive routine to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd, the 22-year-old American joined her coaches and teammates in high spirits.

As was evident to anyone watching, Wagner was very happy.

The two-time U.S. champion was very, very happy right up until the moment when she saw her score.

In full view of those tuned in to NBC Sports Network and watching live streaming coverage of the event online, Wagner's jaw dropped upon learning the judges had awarded a 32.16 technical score and a 30.94 component score.

Wagner, who nearly missed the Olympics after a poor showing at the U.S. National Championships in Boston in January, shook her head and then turned to her coach, muttering something. Before waving to the fans, she seemed to offer the judges a slow clap. Despite her apparent unhappiness with the evaluation, Wagner still managed to smile as she waved to those applauding. She then shook her head again and said something else to her coach, who seemed to be offering a few reassuring words.

"It wasn't what I was really hoping for," Wagner said when asked by Andrea Joyce of NBC about her score. "I know what the program is capable of and I know where the scores should be when I skate very well so I'll just take a look at the protocols."

Even if Wagner was robbed of a few points by the judges, her score was still good for fourth place in the women's short program segment of the figure skating team event. She kept the U.S. team in contention for a medal.

"The entire performance was redemption for me," Wagner told Joyce, referencing her struggles in Boston. "I needed to prove to myself mostly that one bad competition doesn't define me and I can get beyond that."

What remains to be seen is if one spontaneous facial expression made during the Olympics will define her online. As U.S. gymnast McKayla Maroney can attest, unrehearsed reactions can take on a life of their own.
