Mastering decorating small spaces is something many city dwellers struggle with. That's why we were so excited to get an exclusive look at designer Ashley Whittaker’s latest project in House Beautiful's July/August issue, because it's all about playing up a little place.
Whittaker designed the 800-square-foot New York City apartment for a real-life Holly Golightly. So, she knew it had to be both practical and stylish, which is not an easy feat. But by choosing furniture that's multi-functional, like a living room desk that can also act as a dining table, she was able to pull it off.
And what's really impressive is how Whittaker didn't shy away from color and pattern. She was able to make the space feel big without sticking with white walls (something that you'll often see in small spaces.) "Patterns can actually make a place look larger," she told the magazine. She definitely proved that to be true with a blue and white zebra print in the kitchen and green Quadrille wallpaper in the hallway.
But her best piece of advice for anyone living in a tiny space? When decorating, you can't think of the rooms as individuals. "You need to be aware of the room just beyond it, because that’s where your eye travels," she said. "So the idea of contrast between rooms comes into play."
