Ava DuVernay Hosted A Twitter Takeover With 30 Inspiring Female Filmmakers

The "Rebel-a-Thon" included Julie Dash and Amma Asante.

Ava DuVernay started off her Women’s History Month in the most awesome way ever ― by hosting a Twitter chat featuring some of the most talented and influential women in the film industry.

On Wednesday, DuVernay’s filmmaking collective ARRAY started a 12-hour “Rebel-a-Thon” to discuss inclusiveness in the industry.

“We offer this year’s Rebel-a-Thon as an opportunity to highlight the important contributions made by women filmmakers,” ARRAY executive director Tilane Jones said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times.

Among the 30 women filmmakers who joined the Q&A discussion online were Amma Asante (”A United Kingdom”), Julie Dash (”Daughters of the Dust”), Victoria Mahoney (”Yelling to the Sky”), Kasi Lemmons (”Eve’s Bayou”), and Mira Nair (”Queen of Katwe”).

Using the hashtag #ArrayToday, Twitter users were able to ask the filmmakers questions throughout the day about their process and their thoughts on inclusion and diversity in Hollywood.
