The parents of an infant who was locked in a hotel safe in Niagara Falls, Canada, won't be charged, officials said.
The child was placed inside a small safe in a room at the Howard Johnson Hotel on Tuesday by an older sibling during a game of hide-and-seek, and the safe door was somehow locked, NJ.com reports.
The parents called hotel employees who opened the safe, which is 20 inches wide, 14 inches tall, and 17 inches deep, according to Newser.
Authorities said the child spent about 30 minutes in the safe before an employee got to the room. The baby was "alert and crying" by the time it was freed.
The family quickly left the hotel with the child before police could be notified, according to NBC News.
Canadian authorities mounted a manhunt to find them and get the exact details of the incident, Sgt. Scott Kraushar of Niagara Regional Police told the Toronto Star.
“We do want to speak with them just to answer some of our questions,” he said. “We have been in contact with our U.S. counterparts and they have flagged the vehicle on their side as well.”
The family, who hails from New Jersey, contacted police in Markham, Ontario, Wednesday evening after learning authorities were looking for them, according to the New York Daily News.
An investigator from the Child Abuse Unit looked at the child and found it to be in good health, officials told the paper. The matter is considered closed.
