The Bahamas has issued a travel advisory in the wake of police violence in the United States, warning residents to take extra safety precautions if they go on vacation in the U.S.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration has taken a note of the recent tensions in some American cities over shootings of young black males by police officers,” the statement issued Friday reads. It’s presumably referencing the police killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Tuesday, Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota on Wednesday and increased tensions after the sniper attack that left five police officers dead at a Dallas protest Thursday.
“We wish to advise all Bahamians traveling to the US but especially to the affected cities to exercise appropriate caution generally,” the advisory says. “In particular young males are asked to exercise extreme caution in affected cities in their interactions with the police. Do not be confrontational and cooperate.”
The Washington Post notes more than 90 percent of the Bahamas’ residents are black.
The U.S. issued travel warnings this week, urging residents to be aware of violent crime in Venezuela, to “carefully consider the risks” of any travel to Bangladesh in the wake of recent terrorist attacks, and to avoid any travel to Iraq due to threats of terrorism and other violence.
