Bail Out the People Protest

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday this Friday, activists plan to march through Wall Street to protest big bank bailouts and bring attention to the thousands struggling in today's economy. Join the movement and further the cause.

A close cousin to free hugs in Union Square -- it's laughter yoga! According to the Yogalaff laughter yoga site:

Dave Eggers Book Signing

Literary poster boy of the oughts, Dave Eggers is ringing in the new decade with a signing at the Strand, Manhattan's legendary used bookstore. From the Strand site:

Eggers will sign copies of his latest books: Zeitoun, a non-fiction account of a Syrian-American immigrant and his extraordinary experience during Hurricane Katrina; The Wild Things, his book based loosely on Maurice Sendak's picture book, Where the Wild Things Are, and the screenplay by the same name, co-written with Spike Jones; and McSweeney's, No. 33: The San Francisco Panorama, a Sunday-edition sized newspaper, featuring the work of Art Spiegelman, Dan Clowes and Chris Ware, among many others.

UPDATE: Dave Eggers and fellow McSweeney's editor Chris Ying will speak at the New School's Tishman Auditorium on Wednesday, Jan 13 at 5 pm about the "one-time only, Sunday-edition-sized newspaper" San Francisco Panorama, due to come out as the 33rd issue of McSweeney's Quarterly. According to the McSweeney's store site :

It'll have news and sports and arts coverage, and comics (sixteen pages of glorious, full-color comics, from Chris Ware and Dan Clowes and Art Spiegelman and many others besides) and a magazine and a weekend guide, and will basically be an attempt to demonstrate all the great things print journalism can (still) do.

Under the Radar Festival

New York's Under the Radar festival winds up this week, as performers from around the world put on rarely-seen plays across the city. Among the dozens of remaining shows is a live version of John Cassavetes' 1970 film Husbands, aptly titled: John Cassavetes' Husbands, and the Obie award-winning staging of Chekov Lizardbrain from Philadelphia's Pig Iron Theater Company.
