WASHINGTON -- The National Mall needs some tender loving care, and tender loving care costs money. Last Saturday, well-dressed philanthropists raised money for the renovation of the Mall on Saturday at the 5th annual Ball on the Mall.

The black-tie event is one of the annual programs put together by the Trust For The National Mall -- the official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service dedicated to giving the park its first major renovation since 1976.

The Trust for the National Mall, launched in 2008, is trying to raise $350 million for National Mall restoration. The group aims to raise $38 million this year, helped along by a recent $10 million gift from Volkswagen of America.

And if the nonprofit sounds familiar, that may be because "The Daily Show" made it the official charity of their Rally To Restore Sanity in 2010.
