The Bangalore Queer Film Festival -- now in its fifth year -- starts today in India where they'll be featuring 55 films from 20 countries in three days.
BQFF is "an annual event that brings to its audiences queer films from the world over, photo exhibitions, performances and panel discussions." According to its website, the festival also is "firmly interested in both straightforward LGBT films and wildly queer and radical films."
Gay Star News spoke with one of the festival's organizers, Poorva Rajaram, who said, "We are definitely seeing a sharp spike in the amount of experimental cinema we showcase, and that really makes us happy." Rajaram added, "One simple goal is to show films that people cannot easily access themselves and wild, conceptually queer short and long films certainly fit that mold."
One such film is "Mondomanila" from the Philippines, which Rajaram describes as "clearly 'queer' in the conceptual sense" and has a "very particular and penetrating worldview."
Some other films that will be shown include "Call Me Kuchu," a film about slain LGBT-rights activist David Kato -- Uganda's first openly gay man -- who's killed in the face of anti-gay persecution and "Simply Rob," which follows the life of New York-based poet and activist Rob Vassilaraki, among many others.
