The Obama campaign's decision to publish its playlist on Spotify is a huge win for the music streaming service, which has been popular in Europe for several years but which just arrived in America in July 2011. Spotify was a late-mover in the American music-streaming space, trailing services like Rhapsody, MOG and Rdio by years, but it has seen a quick surge in users since its launch, thanks in part to a tight partnership with Facebook that delivers instant notifications of what songs users are listening to on the social network's new Ticker feed.

Along with the news of landing perhaps its most famous user to date, Spotify also told HuffPost in an email that the service had passed 500 million playlists on Spotify and now has over 10 million active users.

President Obama, meanwhile, continues to use emerging social media technologies to boost his campaign: In addition to creating the playlist itself, the Obama twitter feed announced the playlist's creation, as did the President's official Tumblr blog.

The road leading up to the 2012 Presidential election has already had its fair share of musical moments going viral on the web: President Obama has sung Al Green (whose "Let's Stay Together" makes an appearance on the First Spotify List); an advertisement by ex-candidate Herman Cain notably featured "I Am America" by Krista Branch; and GOP candidate Mitt Romney has led a group of senior citizens in "America the Beautiful."
