Barbara Walters Interviews Bashar Al-Assad In Exclusive For ABC (VIDEO)

WATCH: Barbara Walters Interviews Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad

Barbara Walters has landed a major scoop: Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad.

ABC News announced Wednesday morning that Walters had traveled to Damascus to interview Assad, who has not spoken to any American outlet since a major uprising began in the country in March. Since then, thousands of protesters have been killed by government forces in a bloody crackdown.

ABC released a promo for the interview, which will air first on ABC's website on Wednesday morning, followed by segments on all of the network's news shows. The promo shows Walters greeting Assad, driving through Damascus and asking the president, "did you order the crackdown?"

With the interview, Walters follows in the path of her ABC colleague Christiane Amanpour, who was the first American journalist to interview Muammar Gaddafi after the war in Libya began and the first journalist anywhere to interview Hosni Mubarak after the Egyptian revolution began.
