UPDATE: NBC released a statement:
The idea of Barbara bookending her career at NBC News was appealing to
everyone. It was a natural conversation to have with a true broadcast
We have nothing but enormous respect for Barbara.
Barbara Walter dropped a bombshell on Monday's "The View.": NBC tried to hire her back last year.
Talking about how the focus has been on "young-young" in terms of the demographic sought out for advertising, Barbara announced that NBC isn't all young-focused, because they had wanted her.
She said she met with Jeff Zucker, Steve Capus and Mark Whitaker about the opportunity at NBC News.
"I have not talked about this before... Last June NBC came to me and to my amazement made me an offer to come back to NBC News. At my age it was a very flattering offer.. . I chose not to go because I have been very happy at ABC... It was a very difficult decision. I would have been able to continue to do "The View." I just want to say that in spite of the fact it is young young, they did make me this offer, and now I can publicly thank them.
