After 50 years in broadcasting, Barbara Walters has retired.
Her final episode of "The View," which taped Thursday and aired Friday, was full of surprises honoring the legendary journalist. Hillary Clinton was the first surprise guest (Walters, of course, asked about her 2016 plans. "I am running... around the park," Clinton joked). Michael Douglas paid a visit. Then, there was Oprah Winfrey.
"I want to thank you for being a pioneer, and everything that that word means. It means being the first: the first to knock down the door, to break down the barriers, to pave the road that we all walk on," she told a stunned Walters.
Oprah wasn't the only one who wanted to express her gratitude. More than two dozen women in TV news came out from backstage to say farewell and thank Walters. They walked out onto the set one by one and formed a line that stretched from the roundtable all the way backstage.
"This is my legacy," a teary Walters said.
"From the bottom of my heart to all of you with whom I have worked and to all of you who have watched and been at my side for so many years, I can say, thank you, thank you," she said in her closing. "But then, who knows what the future brings? Maybe instead of goodbye, I should say 'à bientôt,' which in French means "See you later." So à bientôt."
