Batata Vada is a popular very Indian vegetarian fast food in Maharashtra, India. It literally means potato fritters. The name "Batata" means potato in Portuguese who introduced potatoes in India. It consists of a spicy potato mash coated with chick pea flour, then deep-fried and served hot with chutney.

This recipe is made in two parts, the filling and the batter. Typically eaten with a chutney of your choice and can be in a bread roll or on its own.

POTATO MIXTURE INGREDIENTS
===========================

900g Potato's (which is about 6 Potato's)
1 Onion - Red or White (chopped in small pieces)
3 tablespoons Tamarind Sauce
1 Tablespoon Cooking Oil
1 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
Fresh Chillies and Garlic
Juice of 1 fresh Lemon
1 teaspoon Cumin Powder
1 teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
Salt to Taste
Fresh Coriander Leaves

BATTER MIXTURE
===============
1 AND 1/2 cups Gram Flour
1/2 teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
1/2 teaspoon Cumin Powder
1/4 teaspoon Baking Powder
Salt to taste
Water
