There are so many things happening in the world, this week, today, right now...
Not all of them are good...
In fact many of them are truly repulsive and unbelievable...
As I reflect on the week, a quote from Seth Godin's post yesterday, The computer, the network and the economy still rings in my ears:
"I don't really have anything interesting to say, and I'm not committed to making a particular change in the world, but I'm pretty good at following instructions."
This makes me sad. My first reaction was to say (to myself):
People have interesting things to say
We can each make a change
I'm not always good at following instructions
But then, as look around me and think about the various encounters I have had this week, I realize that for many, this statement may just ring true.
People are walking around saying "whoa is me..." or "what can I do about it?" or fill in the blank with some sort of excuse. I know because I hear it in my town, on the radio. I can't say on TV because I gave up watching the news a long time ago...
My first reaction is to wonder how we got to such a place where people feel as if they are not interesting, can't change anything and are only good at following instructions. But I think that would bring up unnecessary debate.
Instead, I prefer to ask...HOW?
HOW can we help people not only understand and know they are interesting and to share that with others?
HOW can we educate people and let them know they are change agents?
HOW can we let people know that some rules are made to be broken, especially Brules - I highly recommend reading The Code of the Extraordinary Mind by Vishen Lakhiani
Imagine what life would be like if you realized that you could do all of these things?
Imagine what life would be like if everyone asked these questions and lived up to their truest, best self and not down to the lowest, common denominator.
For many of you reading this, I know that often times, no most of the time, this is not the case.
We all have something interesting to say!
And well, if you are anything like me, I'm not always good at following instructions :-)
So, on this Friday, please share one thought about this.
What is something you do or something you did this week what was interesting, that made a change, that maybe even broke a rule or two?
How can you share these ideas with others to let them know that they matter?
Now, more than ever, this is important.
