A live whale washed ashore in Breezy Point, Queens Wednesday morning.

Update: Officials say the whale is likely to die, as rescuers struggle to save the animal "given the size of the animal and the apparent condition."

The New York Times reports the whale was found on the sand near Beach 216th Street and Palmer Place around 10:40AM.

An NYPD spokesperson said authorities received a phone call about a 60-foot animal sighting and officials promptly arrived to spray the rare finback whale using hoses.

As of 12:30PM, the whale is reportedly still alive with officials awaiting the arrival of members from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation in Long Island to assist.
