Bear necessity is the mother of invention.
At first it's unclear why the pickup truck, with a woman and ladder in the bed, slowly backs up toward a large black bear and open dumpster.
But just moments after the woman drops the ladder into the dumpster and the truck drives away, three baby bears climb out of the dumpster to safety and join their mom.
According to ABC News, Shirley and Tom Schenk, who live in Ruidoso, N.M., were alerted to the bears' predicament when they heard the animals crying throughout the night. So, early in the morning they used their truck and ladder to help the cubs escape.
“They know how to open the latch to the dumpster,” Shirley Schenk told ABC News. “This mother is notorious in the neighborhood.”
This isn't the first time a bear cub has been caught on camera using a ladder to escape from a sticky situation. In June, Judy Coover filmed a cub escaping from her garage near South Lake Tahoe.
And there was also the story of "Foster" the bear, who was tranquilized by Arkansas officials before falling from a tree onto an inflatable "bouncy house" that had been placed underneath.
For those who do encounter a black bear, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish suggests standing upright and waving. Instead of running from the bear, people should back away slowly. Finally, the department advises that people "fight back aggressively" if they are attacked.
