This might just make you fall head over heels for chemistry.
"Beautiful Chemical Reactions," a new video collaboration between scientists and tech gurus at the University of Science and Technology of China and the Tsinghua University Press, showcases eight different chemical transformations in all their microscopic glory. Just check it out above.
Cobalt(II) chloride blooms after being dropped into a sodium silicate solution. This is an example of a chemical garden experiment, the third type of transformation shown in the video.
Inspired by pioneering German biologist Ernst Haeckel, who married art and science with his famous prints of natural forms in the early 1900s, the "Beautiful Chemical Reactions" team used a 4K UltraHD camera to get up close and personal with the reactions. Then they accelerated some of the footage up to 100 times faster than the original speed to better display the changes.
Yellow spreads across a wishbone flower dipped in a sodium hydroxide solution. This experiment demonstrates color change, the fifth type of transformation shown in the video.
"We want to achieve a unique aesthetic of chemistry, making chemistry approachable and lovable. If our effects could get more kids and students interested in chemistry and change people's negative opinion towards chemistry, we would be extremely satisfied," the team wrote on its website.
Mission most definitely accomplished.
