Mackenzie FYL, Painter & Gallery Intern, Shares Her 3 Healthy Hair Tips

"I've actually trained my scalp to produce less oil..."

"I wash my hair every four days or so," Mackenzie FYL, a painter and gallery intern we met in Greenwich Village recently, told us. "It's a trick I learned -- I've trained my scalp to produce less oil. I also never blow-dry or use heat on my hair, nor do I pull it back because I don't want to damage it. If I want it pulled back, I put the ends in a really low, loose braid. When my hair gets really dry and I have time, I do an olive oil soak. I drizzle it on the middle and ends, put it in a little knot and wrap it in a towel or saran wrap, then sit reading a book for an hour before washing it out. If I'm more limited on time, I'll pile on two or three conditioners in the shower and leave them in for 20 minutes while I finish showering. If I have absolutely no time, I'll just use a little hand lotion and put it on the ends."

When it comes to taking care of her skin, she was honest about her routine, or lack thereof. "I don't really wash my face. With my skin type, I don't need to, so I just rinse it off. I do use baby oil to get my makeup off." She did, however, leave us with one good skin tip that we could all benefit from: "The most important thing for my skin is getting sufficient sleep -- eight hours a night for me."
