'Bebe', Homeless Soccer Star, Signed By Manchester United

Manchester United has announced they have signed 20-year-old Portuguese player Tiago Manuel Dias Correia, popularly known by the nickname "Bébé."

Correia has had an unlikely path to soccer stardom -- overcoming the odds to succeed. As a child, Correia was homeless, until he was taken in by an orphanage at the age of 10. The young boy quickly picked up soccer, playing in the streets with his peers.

The Toronto Star reports,

"He's a player who is the fruit of street football," one of Bébé's former coaches, Jorge Paixão, told Portuguese radio.

"Nowadays players are schooled in the clubs, but he has none of this. He's an old-school player. He learned to play in the street and has that natural creativity, an irreverence, and that makes all the difference."

After proving his soccer skills on the street, the athlete went on to represent his country in the Homeless World Cup, an international competition played by homeless athletes, which mimics the FIFA World Cup. Correia was spotted by Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, who recommended the player for Manchester United's roster.
