Before a Decision

It's true that one of the hardest places to be is right before a decision. Options to weigh, pros and cons to think about and discuss, research to do and connections to make can be a few of the mind queries before a decision is made. Before a decision is made about which college to attend, several variables should be carefully reviewed

Cost, size, location, campus life, networking/internship opportunities, career office, retention rate, academic programs offered, religious/non affiliation, political awareness, housing, campus town, safety, research/lab facilities, recreational facility, campus are some considerations before that first deposit payment is made on National College Decision Day, May 1.

However more students than not are still enrolling way past May 1 as not all colleges require deposits by May 1st. Regardless of when you decide on your college, do be thorough, give it careful thought and visit if you can.

Some students may choose to remain on a waitlist. If so, they should still submit a deposit to a college where they have been accepted to assure a spot. The risk is that the student may be accepted by their waitlist college and lose the deposit made to another college. It is also best for students to notify colleges if they choose not to enroll in any college where they have been accepted.

Also, remember the act of double depositing, where students deposit at more than one college, is not appropriate. Morally, double depositing is improper and dishonest. Some may view this as a way to protect a student. The improper act of double depositing tells two or more colleges that you plan on attending in the fall. This does lead colleges into thinking a student will attend when in fact they have no plan to do so.

So, here we are, just a few days before the May 1 deadline, right before students decide where they will attend next fall -- right before a decision.

After weighing all options and making the decision, be proud and confident of your choice and know that what you make of your college experience is up to you!
