Two American porn stars are helping a Canadian sex workers' advocacy group raise money by selling off some adult-themed prizes, including sex toys and a date with one of the actresses.
Belle Knox, better known as the Duke University porn star, and Tasha Reign, a performer who attends the University of California, Los Angeles, are helping fundraise for Maggie's Toronto Sex Workers' Action Project. The top prize includes a dinner date with Reign in the Los Angeles area for $1,500.
Other items up for grabs include one of six pairs of Knox's undergarments for $150 each, a ride on the sex toy known as the Sybian, a custom video from Reign and a copy of the "sex-positive feminist digizine" FLURT. Knox's panties have already sold out, but you can still get a signed photo from her.
The proceeds go to help Maggie's, a group advocating on behalf of sex workers in Canada.
On the fundraising page, the organization writes that they are "facing a budget crunch as we are already stretching our budget to maintain, expand and improve our vitally needed services, such as our weekly Lounge drop-in for sex workers and our street outreach. We want to be able to meet the needs of all of our community members while expanding our outreach and creating opportunities to reach people who are in need of our supports and services."
Knox, an outspoken advocate on behalf of sex workers, is pitching in to help the Maggie's campaign at a time when sex workers' rights are under scrutiny in Canada.
In December, the Supreme Court of Canada unanimously struck down laws against street soliciting and keeping a brothel, ordering the country's parliament to come up with new rules within a year, according to the Toronto Star. New legislation has since been proposed, but it's been met with opposition by some members of the sex worker community.
A recent survey by the Canadian government found that a slight majority of its citizens think purchasing sex services should be illegal, but two-thirds believe selling sex should not be a criminal offense.
