Ben Affleck has commented on playing Batman before (you'll recall his "I handle sh-t" chat with Jimmy Fallon), but in an interview with Al Norton and 411Mania.com, Affleck revealed he wasn't 100-percent sure he should play the Caped Crusader when Warner Bros. first approached him to star.
"Initially, I was reluctant, as I felt I didn't fit the traditional mold, but once Zack [Snyder] showed me the concept, and that it would be both different from the great movies that Chris [Nolan] and Christian [Bale] made, but still in keeping with tradition, I was excited," Affleck said. "Doing something different and new is always tricky and part of the thrill and the risk is that initially it confounds expectations. The truth is, it's the movie and the execution of it is what all the actors depend on and I believe in Zack's vision."
For now, it's expected that "Zack's vision" is to present Affleck's Batman as various shades of grizzled. Speaking with investors last month, Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara said that Batman will be "tired and weary" in "Man of Steel 2," which may wind up being called "Batman vs. Superman."
"Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry Cavill's Superman," Snyder said in the press release that first announced Affleck as Batman. "He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can't wait to work with him."
