Benicio Del Toro In 'Guardians Of The Galaxy': Will He Play Film's Villain?

Joining The Marvel Universe

In an alternate universe, Benicio Del Toro played John Harrison in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek Into Darkness." The Oscar-winning actor was originally named as Abrams' top choice for the heavy in the director's "Star Trek" sequel, but his deal was never closed and Benedict Cumberbatch wound up playing the part instead.

Cut to Monday, and Del Toro is, once again, up for a summer blockbuster: Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy." According to Deadline.com's Mike Fleming, Del Toro has signed up for a "lead role" in the film, meaning he'll have an impact over multiple Marvel movies. Is his role, once again, the mysterious villain?

Well, that's unclear, but online speculation has Del Toro possibly playing Thanos, the monstrous evil doer introduced at the very end of "Marvel's Avengers." If that's the case, Del Toro would likely be motion-captured for his performance, a la how Mark Ruffalo turned into the Hulk for Joss Whedon's summer blockbuster. Regardless, though, Del Toro joins what has become the craziest collection of actors this side of "Machete Kills." Other "Guardians of the Galaxy" stars include Glenn Close, John C. Reilly, Lee Pace, Zoe Saldana and Chris Pratt.
