Red lipstick is at once both instantly glamorizing and totally terrifying. For some of us, at least. Picking the right shade is no easy feat, but there are a couple guidelines that will move you in the right direction toward finding your perfect lip color.
At this point, we all know that certain colors work better on certain skin tones, but, as we see in the video above, there's a super simple way to find out your specific undertones. Flip your wrist over. What color are your veins? If they're blue-based, that means you have cool undertones. Are they more green-based? You have warmer tones. Now that you have a better handle on that, keep in mind that fairer complexions should look for a more classic red and avoid anything too pink. If your tone is more medium, then a darker blue-based red will flatter you best. Darker skin tones should opt for a more orangey-red.
When it comes to application, an initial layer of lip conditioner will create a boost of much-needed moisture. While lip liner is an important step, choose one that's neutral in color as opposed to red. Once you've filled the entire lip in, you can apply straight from the tube or use a lip brush. By starting in the center, then moving outward towards the corners, you can build up the color and intensity. Next, blot with a tissue, apply a thin dusting of face powder, then add one last coat of lipstick. And lastly, employ this genius trick to avoid the dreaded lipstick-on-teeth dilemma: Stick a Q-tip in your mouth, then pull it out. There you have it: perfect red lips, perfectly applied.
