For most adults, the love affair began with lunch box peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or after-school apple slices slathered with the nutty spread. Today, the classic peanut butter from your childhood has some competition from a variety of nut and seed butter. Some offer greater nutrition than peanut butter while others are really just dessert in disguise. "Most have a good amount of fiber and heart-healthy fats," points out Lindsay Malone, M.S., R.D., L.D., a dietitian with the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, while others are too calorie-dense and can be high in sugars.
