Big Freedia Talks Gender Identity, Twerking And Miley Cyrus On HuffPost Live

Big Freedia Talks Unique Gender Identity Stance: 'I'm Comfortable With Who I Am'

The Queen of Bounce stopped by HuffPost Live today to discuss our culture's recent fascination with twerking, Miley Cyrus's controversial VMAs performance and his somewhat unique views on gender identity.

Referencing Big Freedia's cited ambivalence toward male and female pronoun usage, Huffington Post Gay Voices Editor Noah Michelson asked the artist if he considered the issue of starting a mainstream conversation about gender important to him.

"Well, like I said, I'm comfortable with who I am," he responded. "I stand firm in who I am. If one of my fans might want to say he or she, it doesn't matter. I don't have a preference, you know? I'm very much strong in who I am. That doesn't bother me at all."

Big Freedia was in New York this week in an effort to break the Guinness World Record for the most number of people simultaneously twerking at once in Herald Square. Though the validity of this record has come under fire, Freedia still brought out over 250 dancers for the event.
