Thursday marks the San Francisco Bike Coalition's 18th annual Bike to Work Day. Thousands of Bay Area bikers will hit the streets for their daily commute.
This year, the cycling holiday comes along with a series of bright green bike lanes quickly spreading throughout Northern California. The (really) bright green lanes are an attempt to make bicyclists more visible and ensure biking safety.

The idea of painted bike lanes is not a new one. Sunnyvale installed blue bike lanes ten years ago, before a state ruling made green the color of choice. Only recently, however, have other cities embraced the trend. San Francisco installed them among Fell and Market Streets in 2010.
If exercise, saving the environment and the chance to see those bright green lanes up close aren't enough to get you on that bike, the SFBC has also prepared 27 energizer stations along the busiest commuter bike routes for tomorrow's festivities. Between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. tomorrow, bicyclists can stop to fuel up with coffee, bagels and even a free Bike to Work Day tote bag.
